Aunty Deanna’s Cultural Information and Art Workshop

Engadine High School

On the 11th of September the Sharks NRL club funded an amazing experience for the Aboriginal students and their friends that they will not forget.

Aunty Deanna works in a lot of schools in the Shire sharing her knowledge and her expertise as an artist. We in fact have one of her amazing paintings in our front office.

It was such an awesome day, with Aunty showing us many traditional Aboriginal items and teaching us about the people who use them. She also guided us to produce an artwork.  She talked about our local surroundings and encouraged us to include some of the local flora and fauna in our art work. She talked about connection to land, wherever we may come from, and encouraged us to include what is important to us in our art work.

Imagen invited her friend Hayley to the workshop. Imagen described the workshop as fun, interesting and very informative. She learnt a lot about Aboriginal culture. Hayley was super excited and loved the whole experience.

We are very grateful to have Aunty come to our school and share her knowledge. Thank you to Aunty Deanna for coming out, Mrs Silvestre for letting us use your art room, and the Sharkies for sponsoring this whole day.
