Three of our students have been selected as members of the Aboriginal Dance Ensemble – Gili Dancers. Congratulations Allirah Taylor, Stephanie Duric and Owen Shaw.
Six of our indigenous students participated in the inaugural NSW Public Schools Aboriginal Dance Workshop at Sydney Dance Company this term. The students learned traditional and contemporary dance techniques and styles under the very experienced teaching of tutors Sani Townson and Jordan O’Davis.
Sani is a dancer and choreographer with many years’ experience with Bangarra Dance Theatre and choreographing for a number of television programs and major festivals on both the national and international stage. Jordan O’Davis is dancer, model and actor and was a national gymnast for 10 years. Her biography includes touring with Hugh Jackman in “Broadway to Oz”.
Following two days of intensive workshopping the Aboriginal Dance Ensemble – Gili Dancers was announced. From forty-five student participants just ten students were selected to this new ensemble. The Gili Dancers is a new initiative which will see students work with industry professionals to further develop their skills and techniques in Aboriginal dance.
We are incredibly proud that three of our students were selected to be members of the Gili Dancers. Congratulations to Allirah Taylor in Year 7, Stephanie Duric in Year 8 and Owen Shaw in Year 9. These students will now embark on an intensive rehearsal program before performing at the Ultimo Public Schools Dance Festival on the 22 June and at a number of other important cultural events around Sydney.
